Application Instructions
Wood Preparation
Before staining it is important to sand your wood with 220 grit sandpaper. When using a wide belt sander, using 150 grit in the first run and 220 grit in the second run will probably work best.
Using 220 grit sandpaper will do a better job of closing the wood pores which results in less grain raise.
Application
Apply using an airless sprayer, AA airless sprayer, or foam brush. After spraying or brushing wait 1-2 minutes before wiping down for best color consistency.
Temperature
The ideal room and product temperature is between 65-75 degrees and 50% humidity. Warmer room air temperatures may cause the coating to dry too quickly at the edges of the spray fan causing a dusty over spray. Cooler temperatures will slow drying times. The Envista Stain temperature should be similar to the room temperature for best results. Substrate tem perature should be consistent with the room and coating temperature. The substrate must be dry and free of dirt or dust. Consistent temperatures of the spray room, coating and substrate are important for the proper application of Envista Stain.
Ventilation
Ventilation of the spray room is critical for timely drying of the Envista Stain. The spraying process of this waterborne coating creates moisture in the air that needs to be ventilated out of the room for quicker drying. Air movement needs to be through and out of the spray room, not just around the spray room. The best way do this is to have a fresh air intake of some kind, even if it’s a window or door, and exhaust fans at the other end of the room blowing air to the outside. The more moisture you move out of the spray room with ventilation the quicker the coating will dry. The less air you move through the longer it will take to dry. Humid and colder air will slow drying times.
Equipment
Spray equipment must be maintained and working properly for best results. We recommend using a 312 or 412 tip.
With an AA airless sprayer, air pressure may be 20 psi and the fluid pressure 40 psi. Equipment recommendations are general and can vary with the personal preferences and requirements of each person during the application. We recommend that those doing the application experiment with different tips and find what works best for your situation and circumstances.
To clean up, simply use water to wash spray equipment. It is advised to run mineral spirits through after water to keep seals and parts lubed. If applying with a brush, simply discard the brush and rags after staining application is done.
